Madeleine the “Illustrationer”

Maddy loves to draw, color, paint or do any kind of artwork. She always asks me who illustrated the picture books we read to her and has recently started telling us that she is going to be an “Illustrationer” when she grows up! Looks like she inherited Ben’s talent and love of art. Here are a few of her most recent creations with the descriptions she gave us for them:

First Day of “School”

We started Madeleine in a sort of pre-preschool program last week and she will be going for 3 hours every monday morning. She loved going to school and especially enjoyed playing in the indoor gym with balls and hula hoops and storytime! The program is really more about playing than learning, but we’re hoping it will help prepare her for preschool in the fall and it gives me a little time to rest during these last months of pregnancy. It was the first time I had to pack her a lunch and that made it feel like she was going off to real school! But we’re very glad that she had so much fun and is making some new friends.

First Trip to the Dentist

Madeleine went for her first trip to the dentist last week and we were so proud of how well she did! I had been dreading the visit, not knowing how she would react to having her mouth poked and prodded, but she just marched into the dentist chair and didn’t complain once! She didn’t have any cavities or problems, but they did say she needs to stop sucking her thumb (no surprise there). Otherwise her teeth are great and she loved the prize bag they gave her at the end, complete with a Cinderella electric toothbrush.

We have had such a full year in 2011 and that is our only excuse for not updating this blog more often! In addition to a trip to Hawaii during the summer, Madeleine also had her first taste of school with a preschool art class, potty trained, went on numerous hikes, moved to a new house and found out that she is soon going to be a big sister! It’s impossible to catch up with all this news in one post, but here is a look at Madeleine’s year in 2011 as we look forward to many new adventures in 2012.

Madeleine Ballerina

Ever since receiving the book Angelina Ballerina for Christmas, Madeleine has been very interested in dancing and all things related to ballerinas! She was also given a tutu for Christmas and I recently bought her a dress with an attached tutu and ballet shoes so she is now ready to dance. Below are some pictures of her posing on the couch in her new ballet dress. We’ll see how long this phase lasts.

This was the first year that Madeleine really looked forward to Christmas and enjoyed opening her gifts. She especially liked opening her advent calendar every evening after dinner and playing with her nativity set. We spent Christmas Eve with Katie’s family including her Grandma who was visiting from Hawaii and then saw Ben’s family on Christmas day. Madeleine was thoroughly spoiled by everyone and is now worn out from playing with all her new toys including a little piano, a tent, a ballet tutu and leotard and a dollhouse. We’re excited to see what the New Year holds for our family and to look forward to watching Madeleine continue to grow and learn!

Madeleine has recently started loving to draw. One day she would draw scribbles on pieces of paper and I (Ben) would put eyes and legs on them to make monsters and she loved it. Shortly after that she created these two masterpieces:

After drawing this she proclaimed “goldfish!”

And this one she called “a man with a tail.”

We haven’t been posting very much lately because there just hasn’t been much going on in our lives since we got back from Hawaii in June. This week, however, has been a flurry of activity in celebration of Madeleine’s second birthday. She has been feted and showered with gifts all week long by her generous relatives culminating in a small second birthday bash on her actual birthday. Also, we gave her a play kitchen in the hope of encouraging our budding chef. :) Here are some pictures from her birthday and her party. We love you, Maddy and wish you many blessings and much joy in your second year. We can’t wait to see what comes next!
