• Jaundiced!

Blasted bilirubin struck our lovely little orange lady today. We had our first ever Dr.’s visit and all was well. She is quite healthy and beginning to grow now. The Dr. noted her growing orangeness and asked us to go to the hospital to get her bilirubin count tested. She came back with a test result of 25. Our Dr. told us that she would need to be treated and that we should head for the hospital. A result of under 20 means that the jaundice can be treated from home, above that is reason for more extreme measures. This they call hyperbilirubinaemia or more commonly, jaundice. So we found ourselves in for another surprise hospital stay. They promptly put little Maddy in a lightbox and gave her an IV to get her extra fluids. They told us the usual stay for this sort of thing is about 2-3 days. Not really what we were planning to do with the week :(.

So I (Ben) was driving home alone to get our supplies for staying overnight since we were woefully unprepared. I was feeling pretty down, this is the first time I’ve actually been away from little Maddy, so I hit the cd player to see what was in it and try to sway my thoughts. These are the words that came out:

God, it hurts to give You what I’ve held so dear
Because of Your love it’s clear
I can trust You with this
I can trust You with me
    I can trust You

That made me feel a million times better. God has been so good to us in Maddy’s journey here. Even after all that it was easy not to put full trust in his grace and mercy. To do that again felt so good.

So anyway, upon returning to the hospital the nurse came in and told us that her blasted bilirubin count was down to 17. w00t! Also Maddy expelled two very impressive diapers (her primary mode of getting rid of the bilistupid) which made me very proud of her :). So we’re still in the hospital, killing bilirubes and waiting to see when they’ll let us go home. But for now, things are looking on the up :).

Sorry about the jaundice, Bud! But it’s all part of the journey. I’m glad you handling it well. I’m delighted that you’re trusting God with little Maddy. She’s in good hands, both God’s, you and Katie’s! I’m happy Maddy is okay. Hang in there, Bud! I’m proud of you! Welcome to parenthood.

      Love you three!
